Update from Zambia

Kristen has asked me (Kristen's mom) to update her blog for her. She has limited access to computers but I've heard from her via text every day since she left home. Putting her on the plane Thursday night was one of the hardest things I've ever done (the mother instinct to protect never goes away!), but I will continue to place my trust in God and know that He will guide her path.

Rather than use "my" words to reflect her journey, I will copy her text messages below:

Please update the blog today! Spent the day at the hospital...amazing! Saw more things today than in my whole nursing career. I am going to learn so much. The culture is so crazy...I have fallen in love with 2 kids....Shephard who is 7 and has club feet and a 13 year old boy who also has club feet. I've seen a lot of hydrocephalus -- there are probably 10 cases of it here right now. Cared for a critical child that was post op from Dr. Kachinga for hydrocephalus. I did meet Kachinga today but I will not follow him all the time. I worked with another doctor assessing the patients for surgery tomorrow and learned so much. The director of nursing is making a plan for us to go to all the different areas. This week we are in outpatient care and next week we will do surgeries every day. The people here are amazing. Dr. Kachinga was very nice when I met him but he had to go to a funeral today for one of his mentors. :( He looked well though. Today was quite overwhelming but so so so glad to be here!
Josh has been a God-send for me. There have been some crazy things that have happened trying to get here that I'll tell you about another time. Sleep is so difficult! Please pray for my anxiety to go away. I've had it non-stop since getting here. It's overwhelming and I know it's not from God. Thank you for all your prayers!
